I liked this chapter a lot because of the story of Laura White who had an experience of being a social innovator early on during her school years. I envision my children having similar experiences and while I was creating my own company, I also dreamt about all the other non-profits that I can contribute too and in the process, expose my own biological children, students at Splendor and students at Greenville high school too. Slowly but steadily, I am working towards that goal and see my students getting involved in laying the foundation of that non-profit as well. I tell my students that we are a family, I learn from you and you learn from me. As an innovator, i learn from my children all the time and hopefully I will be able to set up an organization for my current students to go to after their graduation for help in their entrepreneurial endeavor. I don`t want to give out a lot of information on the non-profit yet but, I perceive that the world will need more social enterprenrurs than ever with the current challenges that humanity faces and also with the technological advances that can foster the culture of collaboration and innovation.
I also like the way the chapter talks about the importance of time-management and prioritization etc. As our children grow up, they will be wanting to do more and more seeking out for personal and professional expansion for their satisfaction. IT is very important that educators in our times, teach students time management, collaboration etc. I think I appreciate PBL mode of teaching more and more as I grow into being a PBL teacher.
I like the you tell your students that they are like your family and that your goals are coming to pass. Time management is also a great skill to teach students.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea that as educators we are being directed to teach children how to manage their learning, self evaluate and use collaboration to ensure that they are "doing" things right (as compared to their peers). No longer will a student sit in a classroom wondering "Why are others getting this stuff and I am not? They will be able to see how their peers are learning, interrupting, and expressing their learning. Additionally, all students will gain the ability to listen and interrupt each others understandings making the learning more personal and their own.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we are all a family and it takes time and patience to make students believe that. I also truly care about them try hard to build a culture to ensure that they know this.
ReplyDeleteTime management is so important and I know that students feel they have all the time in the world to do what they need and always want more time when they are ready for our deadlines. Last class we discussed checklists and I will definitely be using this with my students to keep them on track.
Don't know why my name isn't appearing tonight but Sara Beth published the last comment
ReplyDeleteJigna - I appreciate what you have shared regarding social innovators. These innovators are as important (if not more so) than our technical/skill innovators. Both types of innovators must look for the problems and areas of potential improvement(s). If we want our students to become proactive problem-solvers, we must teach and model this for them.
ReplyDeleteYou have spoken much about the necessary soft skills for our students to be successful in tomorrow's world. While I believe this is true, I have been challenged to consider how these soft skills are assessed. Any thoughts on this? How do we, as educators, assess the soft skills we deem important? Some soft skills are easier to assess than others...time management, collaboration, and communication are probably easier to "grade" than creativity, critical thinking, and integrity. What do you think?
Thank you for your reflection and response.
I agree that having the students mangae their own progress toward the goals is the best way to teach, and for that in PBL I am glad. I recall when my son was in elementary school at Bell's Crossing in the Five Forks area that they used the Baldridge method of accountability with the students where they monitored their own progress. I would love something like that in the PBL units. Maybe we could have an accountability sheet that they had to fill out as a reflection of effort and learned material along the way. As for social innovation I think the more exposure the better with students from all backgrounds.
