After reading Building school communities one brick at a time and Navigating the intricacies of PBL. I feel that implementing PBL is possible. As we are laying the foundation one brick at a time I believe that we must be flexible and not so rigid. The intricacies of PBL and grouping is the laying of the foundation bricks by brick. Once we assess our students with a formative test we can then spread them out into PBL groups. At this point we need to have a hands off approach and be the facilitator.
We also need to build teacher buy in. We need to share PBL until the whole school buys in. When this happens amazing results will happen school wide and further as time goes on.
We need to reach out to our community. Once we get the community to buy in then we can make some real world connections

ReplyDeleteI believe you are correct in your thinking. We must have a balance in our work...this, as the article points out, is the art and science of what we do. Inquiry, itself, requires flexibility and a willingness to adjust. At the same time, while allowing for student choice and control, we must keep them accountable for their learning. This is where formative assessment must come in.
I'd like to suggest that we determine our learning goals based on standards and (more importantly) our student's current abilities. Once learning goals are established, we must determine the evidence we will seek to gage our effectiveness toward these goals. Once the needed evidence is identified, we must plan for the strategies or instructional efforts we will implement to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate the evidence we desire to collect. Once the evidence is collected, we must then take the necessary time to analyze what we notice and make any determinations in our efforts toward the original established goals. Finally, we repeat the process by creating or establishing new learning goals that will further extend our student's educational journeys. This is what I refer to as the Cycle of Continuous Assessment or simply personalized learning!
Thank you for thinking with me!
